Summer
in most parts of the world might be synonymous with sunshine, however here in
Cyprus this time of year brings a lot of sunshine sometimes as high as 60o
c, which often leaves most of our African Skin with such dryness and
breakouts. In such a society with little
or no market for the African Skin beauty products, hardly will you find one. Except for the
lucky few who go extra mile to order their skin beauty products online. While
the rest who do not have the means are left to allow their skin die off in such
harsh weather.
Over
time, I have checked some vlog on how to use natural homemade ingredients to help
our African sisters get back their radiant beauty. It has really worked for me,
and felt I share.
You
can achieve amazing results using these very simple homemade ingredients. The
simple ingredient we're suggesting for this summer is coconut oil.
Coconut
oil has become the must-have oil of the year. People are using it for skincare,
haircare, dental care, food- you name it. Virgin coconut oil, which can be
found locally, is non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn't clog your pores and helps
control the oil your skin naturally produces.
We've
come up with four ways you can experiment with coconut oil to get fresher and
brighter skin this summer. Take a look at some of our homemade recipes with
virgin coconut oil below!
1) Moisturiser
that gives an instant glow
Coconut
oil is especially effective at helping your skin retain moisture. It has lots
of fatty acids that nourish your skin with nutrients. An added bonus? Naturally
occurring SPF to protect your skin from UV rays. After washing your face, rub a
small amount between your palms and apply directly to your clean face. Remember
that less is more!
2) Oil cleansing face wash
If you
have sensitive skin, some of the harsh chemicals found in most face washes
could exacerbate your acne or breakouts. Coconut oil is extremely useful at
cleansing the skin of impurities because it's a natural antibacterial and
anti-fungal agent. In addition, oil cleansing is super effective at makeup
removal, which makes it a two in one solution. We know oil cleansing seems
strange, so if you're hesitant try it for a week and see what results you get.
We have a
strong inkling your face will be smoother, brighter and give you some of that
glow you've been looking for. Here's a recipe with basic ingredients you can
find anywhere:
1
tablespoon extra-virgin coconut oil
1 tsp honey
5 drops of lemon juice
1 tsp honey
5 drops of lemon juice
Combine
the ingredients in a bowl. Use the mix to wash your face as you normally would.
Be sure to rinse well! This works Wonders.
3) Exfoliating
Scrub
It's
important to exfoliate year round because of dead skin build-up-try coconut oil
to get in a two punch exfoliant and hydrating scrub. Some exfoliators can be a
little too harsh, but we recommend this scrub because the sugar acts as an
exfoliant and the coconut oil acts as a moisturizer. This scrub can be used on
your face, hands and body so make a little extra if you want to treat yourself
this week.
1 cup
extra virgin coconut oil
1/2 cup raw cane sugar (large granules)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon orange juice (adds in an additional cleansing aspect)
A couple drops of any essential oil of your choosing (we recommend vanilla)
1/2 cup raw cane sugar (large granules)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon orange juice (adds in an additional cleansing aspect)
A couple drops of any essential oil of your choosing (we recommend vanilla)
- Fill a large microwaveable bowl with hot water and put the opened container of coconut oil in the middle (so that the oil melts).
- Carefully remove the jar of oil from the bowl, get rid of the water and put both the cane sugar and brown sugar in the bowl.
- Add about half of the jar of melted coconut oil to the bowl with the sugars and mix well.
- Add a few drops of whichever essential oil you found and mix a little bit more.
- Add your mixture to any container of your choosing (we recommend mason jars!)
Apply the
scrub as you normally would. For a deep treatment, once you've applied the
scrub, wrap the chosen area with cling film for ten minutes before rinsing.
For me I ex-foliate 4 times in a week, and it works well for me, bringing out the youthfulness in
my skin.
4) Hydrating Mask
Did you
know that coconut oil also prevents premature aging? The antioxidants help your
skin retain its elasticity. Try this hydrating mask with a sure to please
combination of honey, coconut oil and avocado that will leave your skin
glowing, soft and bright.
2
tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 mashed avocado (well whisked)
1/2 mashed avocado (well whisked)
- Mix the ingredients together and place in a container of your choosing.
- Refrigerate the mask for about an hour and it's ready to use!
For use:
Apply the mask to your clean face for about 5 minutes and then remove with a
warm moist towel.
