Argentine Jorge Bergoglio has been elected pope, the first ever from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium. He chose the name Pope Francis. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ is an Argentine cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires until yesterday [Mar. 12], serving since 1998. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. Born December 17, 1936 (age 76). He is the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church.
