The Lady Called Meheeda

During the past week Nigerian blogosphere was buzzed with the news of singer Maheeda's Instagram account being blocked. Her account was blocked by Instagram simply because she violated the no nudity policy by posting a picture of the privates of a male fan. I have been following keenly news involving musician Maheeda simply because she amuses me.

I have tried and tried to understand why someone like her would act the way she does but I cant seem to find any answer. Instead of condemning her, I have tried to really understand who she is as a person, and what actually motivates her to take the path she's threading. I always ask myself, What does her husband think of her social media behavior? Who takes the racy photos of her? How about her daughter? Surely she must have access to the internet and she must have seen her at least one of her mothers pictures. For me to be able to have an opinion about an issue, I first believe you have to truly understand all aspects of  the issue at hand. So far the only logical conclusion I can come up with is that she must be doing all that out of boredom/loneliness. I know she is living abroad and I know how life overseas can really be lonely especially if you don't have family and you are not doing anything productive. It can actually drive you nuts. So guys what do you think about her actions?

Truth is we live in a society and world where sex sells and nowhere is this more demonstrated than in the music industry. On the other hand, we live in a society where women are relegated to the background and there are several more places where this is demonstrated more obviously than in the music industry but let’s face it: female artistes are a dying breed.

What we have is that the men use women and nudity to push themselves to the top but society makes it impossible for a woman to do the same on her way to the top. I am a tad irritated at the way our society defines what and how a woman should be and so whenever anyone comes along with a bit of difference.

However in a country of hypocrites who every single week make sure that a porn site is on the top ten most visited websites in Nigeria according to alexa.com, Maheeda may be trying to push too much or change too much all at once. Artistes make the bulk of their money these days from endorsements, not album sales and no company would want her face anywhere near their brand, even the condom, tobacco and alcohol manufacturers. Without endorsements, no artiste can go far. I also think she can work more on her voice – it comes across like she’s a bit in between music genres and her voice would be better suited to rapping or fast-flowing where she comes across quite audibly and intelligently. I heard a line that ended catch-up and the next line was ‘spill on you like ketchup’ among other better than average lines and lyrics. I also worry just a teeny little bit that many men (and women of course) may not take her seriously when she expects to be so treated such as in negotiating a deal for instance – she may have to use that body as leverage since it is like her brand identity at the moment. Mesheeda or whatever her name is, am not here to criticise you, you alone know yourself better, and know the reason for your action, but as a blogger mine is to get my subcribers aware of the happens around.

My questions to you subcribers is, why do you think she acts the way she does? I know this is different from what I normally blog about, but its an issue that has been a mystery to me and I wanted to share my thoughts on it and possibly hear yours too.
